Don’t Let Time-Wasting Defeat You – Conquer It Before It Conquers You!

We all have limited time available to accomplish our goals, yet so many of us are unwittingly wasting time on tasks and activities that take up time, but don’t bring us any closer to our desired accomplishments. We may recognise that we’re wasting time, but don’t understand why or how to stop it. Are you wasting time and don’t even know it? Below are a few tips to help you conquer time wasters before they conquer you.

First and foremost, keep a daily log. This can help you track where you are wasting time and help you determine how much time is devoted to each task or activity. You can even set goals or targets to reduce or eliminate certain activities or to divert that time to more important tasks.

Second, be mindful of time-wasters. A time-waster is any activity that takes up more of your time than you would like it to. Examples include checking emails or social media multiple times a day, hunting for information that can be obtained in a more efficient manner, having too many meetings when an email would suffice, multitasking, using old or inefficient methods to accomplish tasks, or simply procrastinating too much on smaller tasks. Identify these and make sure to eliminate them.

Third, try to create habits and routines for yourself. Automating certain tasks can help free up your time to focus on more important things. A few ideas include having a morning routine, planning out what you will do each day the night before, or batching tasks that can be done together such as errands or completing certain types of tasks on particular days.

Fourth, prioritise and focus. Take time to prioritise your tasks and then focus solely on the most important task at hand until it is complete. This will help keep you from being side-tracked by less important tasks and help you get more of your most important tasks done throughout the day.

Finally, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Our brains can only focus on so much, so don’t try to do everything all at once. Instead, delegate and ask for help. Whether it’s delegating tasks to colleagues, hiring a virtual assistant, or finding a mentor or coach, don’t be afraid to take help and free up some of your time.

It’s easy to lose sight of all the time we have, and easily succumb to time-wasters. But with a little bit of effort and intentional planning, you can easily conquer time-wasters and begin to prioritise what is most important to you. After all, your time is valuable, so why not use it to do the things you want to do instead of wasting it on tasks that don’t ultimately lead you to your goals?
